Introduction to Backpacking

Date:  Thursday April 8 - Sunday April 11, 2007

Location: Roan Mountain/Appalachian Trail, Tennessee

Ready to try backpacking but not sure where to begin?

 

This beginner-friendly backpacking retreat is designed to help you learn backcountry skills, build confidence on trail and explore nature safely. All gear and food will be provided! You'll learn how to pack your bag, set up camp, use a camp stove, read a map and compass, use gpx files and much, much more.

Itinerary:

Thursday Evening: we will camp at an established campground where we will begin learning and practicing our backcountry skills

Friday: we begin our hike and will camp along the trail on Friday night using our new backcountry skills (expect the hike to be a moderate 4-5 miles in length)

Saturday: we finish our hike and return to the campground for one more night together (another 4-5 miles)

Sunday: we depart for home!

What makes this retreat unique?

This backpacking retreat is more than just an educational course. Over the course of the weekend, you'll be able to disconnect and enjoy nature, meet like-minded individuals and learn many new skills. You'll experience mountain views and dive deep into the rich history of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.

Pricing: Early bird pricing: $325 (price increases January 1, 2027) This retreat will be maxed at 8 participants. 

What's included:

  • 2 full days/3 nights of camping, backpacking and backcountry education

  • all food and gear

What's not included:

  • transportation to/from Roan mountain

  • additional lodging or activities outside of retreat time

Meet your head guide, Lauren:

Lauren is a former research scientist and teacher turned endurance coach and guide. She brings years of diverse adventure experience to the table. Her mission is to provide meaningful experiences for reflection and growth through time in the wilderness. She believes that everyone--from the wannabe adventurer to the most experienced adventure athlete--should have the opportunity to explore, learn and build community in the wild.  When not coaching or guiding, Lauren spends her time ultrarunning, backpacking, adventure racing, mountaineering and traveling. You can see her in action on Discovery Channel's Season 16 of Naked and Afraid.
